Description

Gallbladder removal surgery, medically known as cholecystectomy, is a common procedure performed to treat gallbladder-related conditions, most commonly gallstones. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver, and its primary function is to store and concentrate bile produced by the liver. Bile aids in the digestion of fats. There are two main types of cholecystectomy: Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: This is the most common method and is typically preferred due to its minimally invasive nature. Here's a general overview of the procedure: Preparation: Before the surgery, the patient is given anesthesia to ensure they are unconscious and pain-free during the procedure. The abdomen is cleaned and sterilized, and the patient may be given antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection. Incisions: The surgeon makes several small incisions (usually 3-4) in the abdomen. These incisions are typically less than an inch in length. Insertion of Instruments: A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light attached to it, is inserted through one of the incisions. This allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen. Other specialized instruments are inserted through the remaining incisions. Removal of Gallbladder: Using the laparoscope and instruments, the surgeon carefully detaches the gallbladder from the liver and bile ducts. The gallbladder is then removed through one of the incisions. Closure: Once the gallbladder is removed, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape. In some cases, dissolvable stitches may be used. Open Cholecystectomy: This approach is less common and is typically reserved for situations where a laparoscopic procedure is not feasible, such as in cases of severe inflammation or scarring. It involves a larger incision in the abdomen and a longer recovery period. Preparation: Similar to laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the patient is given anesthesia before the surgery. Incision: The surgeon makes a single, larger incision in the abdomen, typically just below the ribcage on the right side. Gallbladder Removal: The surgeon carefully removes the gallbladder through the incision. Closure: After the gallbladder is removed, the incision is closed with sutures or staples.
